THE REVENUE Commissioner officials swooped last week on an Enniscorthy industrial estate to seize 3.8 million illicit cigarettes. The raid was carried out by Customs officers who estimated that their haul had a street value of €1.5 million, with a potential loss to the Exchequer of €1.3 million.

' The seizure took place in an industrial estate,' confirmed a Revenue spokeswoman. 'For operational reasons we cannot give a more specific location.' The raid was conducted without the active assistance of local Gardaí.

The exercise netted cartons of '821 Red' brand cigarettes which were landed in Ireland at Dublin port after they were shipped from Rotterdam. The illicit load of untaxed tobacco was kept under observation as it was transported from the capital to Enniscorthy.

The spokeswoman said that two men had been interviewed in connection with the find which is part of an investigation being conducted both in Ireland and abroad. Members of the public who have any information regarding the smuggling or sale of illegal cigarettes, they can contact Revenue in confidence on Free Phone Number (1800) 295295.
