48 charges of indecent assault

A 60-YEAR- OLD man appeared at Wexford District Court yesterday (Monday) charged with 48 counts of indecent assault against young males. The charges date from 1966 to 1979 and involve three injured parties.

The man who has an address in Wexford town, was remanded on bail o the court on November 19 for a book of evidence.

The investigating garda said the prosecution had no objection to bail with certain conditions, including that the defendant sign on each Monday at Wexford Garda Station and make no contact, direct or indirect, with the injured parties, family members or witnesses. The arresting officer said that when she charged the accused he said: 'I didn't do it', and 'It never happened.'

Solicitor Colette Culleton asked for reporting restrictions due to the 'seriousness of the situation.'

Judge Gerard Haughton said there are already reporting restrictions in place in law and the media are aware of them.
