€900,000 on for works at
ALLOCATION INCLUDES €100,000
THE GOVERNMENT has allocated €900,000 for improvement works at Wexford Harbour, including €100,000 for the refurbishment of the old Ballast Office on Crescent Quay.
The allocation is coming from the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport and will be spent by Wexford County Council, which now has responsibility for the operation of Wexford Harbour.
The bulk of the money, €730,000, is for work at the temporary landing quay on the Ferrybank side of the harbour, while €70,000 has been allocated for the erection of signage and barriers.
The provision of €100,000 for the Ballast Office is a welcome announcement, as the landmark building has fallen into disrepair. Wexford Chamber of Industry and Commerce, which was based in the premises for several years, recently moved out to modern offices at Kerlogue Enterprise Centre to facilitate the planned refurbishment work.
Wexford TD Brendan Howlin welcomed the allocation, saying it represented a substantial increase in funding for the harbour. The previous allocation was €191,824.
