Abbeygale House passes HIQA inspection with flying colours
A HSE-run nursing home in Wexford has been highly praised in a report by the Health Information and Quality Authority (HIQA) following an announced visit by a HIQA inspector.
Abbeygale House, which occupies the upper floor of the split-level Farnogue Residential Healthcare Unit on the Old Hospital Road, was visited by HIQA on December 11 and 12 last year.
The report, released last week and published on HIQA's website, says the inspector met with residents and noted that 'throughout the inspection, residents were seen to be treated with dignity and respect and choices were being respected.'
'Residents spoke very highly of the staff describing them as kind and caring. One resident said it was like having a big family.'
The 30-bed Abbeygale House opened in 2012 to provide dedicated older persons' services and replace the facilities at Ely House. The unit has 24 single ensuite bedrooms and two, three-bed ensuite rooms, as well as two communal sitting rooms, a visitors' room, hairdressing salon and an enclosed garden. HIQA's report says that 'overall, a good service was being provided to the residents. The centre had an established management team in place and was well run for the benefit of the residents who lived there.'
The report says that on the day of inspection all mandatory staff training was up to date and that 'systems were in place to ensure the environment was safe for residents, staff and visitors'.
According to the report, 'residents' civil and religious rights were respected'. Residents confirmed to the inspector that 'they had been offered the opportunity to vote at election time'.
'Mass was celebrated on a weekly basis and residents told the inspector how grateful they were for this.'
Abbeygale House was found to be compliant, or substantially compliant, in all but one regulatory area: medicines and pharmaceutical services.
While the inspector noted 'safe medication management practices', the issue of access to a pharmacist - requiring action after a previous inspection - 'had not been addressed within the agreed timescale'.
'Pharmacy services were provided by the local general hospital. There was no evidence that a choice of pharmacist was available to residents or that the obligations of the pharmacist to the resident as required under relevant legislation and guidance, were being met.'
The report notes that a 'business case has been submitted to the chief officer for the recruitment of a pharmacist' to provide compliance with this regulation.
