A&E sees less young people intoxicated

THE number of young people treated in the accident and emergency department of Wexford General Hospital for the effects of excessive alcohol, has reduced rather than increased in recent years.

'We don't see as many young people coming in grossly intoxicated as we did previously,' said A&E consultant Dr. Paul Kelly.

'In the underage and teenage category, it would have been more of a problem in the 1990's. There seems to have been a decrease in recent years.'

Dr. Kelly said any cases related to excess alcohol are usually concentrated on occasions of celebration such at St. Patrick's Day, Stephen's Day and New Year's.
