Alfie alerts customs to 69,000 cigarettes at Rosslare port
Cigarettes with a retail value of €34,600 were seized at Rosslare Europort on Thursday, March 5.
More than 69,000 cigarettes were found concealed in a UK registered car after officers from the Revenue's Customs Service searched the car as a result of routine profiling.
The 'L&M' and other various brand cigarettes were discovered when detection dog Alfie indicated on the floor of the vehicle. The cigarettes were concealed in the floor, door panels, and boot area of the car which had disembarked a ferry from France.
A 26 year old Lithuanian male was arrested and charged and brought before Gorey District Court. At Gorey District Court, the man was remanded in custody to appear at Wexford District Court on Tuesday, March 10.
The cigarettes seized represent a potential loss to the Exchequer of €27,214. This is assuming that they would have displaced the equivalent full tax paid quantity of cigarettes

This is the latest in a series of significant finds made at Rosslare recently. On March 1 more than 24,000 cigarettes with a value of €12,200 were seized while on February 12 34,000 cigarettes with a value of €13,457 were seized.
