'Clean Hands Save Lives' was the slogan as Wexford General Hospital celebrated Hand Hygiene Day.

'Clean Hands Save Lives' was the slogan as Wexford General Hospital celebrated Hand Hygiene Day.

The day was designated by the World Health Organisation to highlight the importance of hand washing in the prevention of infections that thrive in healthcare facilities.

Staff, patients and visitors at Wexford Hospital were treated to information about hand hygiene which is recognised internationally as the single most effective measure that healthcare workers, patients and the public can undertake to prevent healthcare associated infection.

Two hand hygiene promotional stands were set up and staff and visitors were invited to try out their hand washing techniques.

There was a hand hygiene competition for staff and a patient survey was carried out during the day.

Posters and leaflets were distributed and a children's colouring competition was also held to get the message across to young patients.

Hand Hygiene Day was part of Wexford General Hospital's continuing strategy to improve hand hygiene compliance among staff.

'Good hand hygiene is a fundamental part of quality patient care and is a priority for Wexford General Hospital,' said a spokeswoman.

The event was organised and supported by the hospital's senior management team and and Infection Prevention and Control Committee.
