Barntown parish sells site for €450,000 to clear church debt

The parish of Barntown is selling a prime 4.99 acre site at a guide price of €450,000 in the hope of eliminating a long standing debt on the local church which is also badly in need of further restoration and improvements.

The site close to Barntown school, church and community centre in a sought after residential area, was placed on the market last week by joint selling agents Dolores Power and John Keane auctioneering firms.

It comes with planning permission recently granted by Wexford County Council for the construction of nine detached family homes with garages.

The site which is owned by the parish, will be sold at a public auction in the Talbot Hotel on Wednesday, May 29 at 3 p.m.

If the sale is successful, the proceeds will be used to clear a €200,000 debt on the parish church with funds from the remaining amount going towards improvement works on the church building and church grounds.

It is expected that the parish committee will meet following the auction and decide on a plan of action.

'A sizeable, and yet to be agreed, body of work needs to be carried out on the church and within the church grounds and environs and this will be a priority should the sale be effected', said Glynn Barntown parish priest Fr. John Carroll.

It is understood that the church renovation works will include stained glass restoration, painting, tarmac, trees and a smoke alarm system.

'Gratitude is expressed to the local parish for its ongoing commitment to eliminating the debt which has reduced year on year through shrewd management and local generosity', said Fr. Carroll.

The Pugin-designed St. Alphonsus Church in Barntown underwent a major refurbishment project in 1999, costing in the region of €700,000 of which €200,000 still remains.

Wexford County Council granted planning permission with conditions in February of 2018 to Fr. Carroll for the building of 10 two-storey four-bedroomed homes. One house was subsequently removed from the plan to facilitate ESB network infrastructure.

The potential value of the land was enhanced by the full planning permission.

Auctioneer Dolores Power who has lived in Barntown for many years, described it as a 'superb site' and said there are also exciting plans for extensions and improvements to the local community centre and to provide new playing pitches in the national school which has 300 pupils.
