Can you give me a loan? No, we'll give you a car!

A 76-year-old lifelong Wexford Credit Union member was the lucky winner of a brand new Opel Astra in the branch's October Car Draw.

Sean McDermott (76) from Duncormick, and his wife Margaret, picked up the keys to the new car on Tuesday last and both were delighted to get behind the wheel.

Sean, who is originally from Wicklow, explained that he had arthritis and so did not do too much driving, but said his wife Margaret was happily whizzing around in it!

There is an element of things coming full circle for Sean who, over 40 years ago, bought his first car with help from the Credit Union.

While working in Wexford Creamery, where he was employed until his retirement, he was driving lorries and collecting milk from farms around the country.

'I had met a farmer up the country who had a grand car for sale, his daughter wasn't using it anymore and he offered it to me for £300. I had £200 saved so I went in to the Permanent Building Society that evening on the way home from work. They wouldn't give me anything because they said I'd get nothing for £300.'

Sean, who was a member in the Credit Union at the time, then cut across to the branch where he stated his case to teller Nancy Reck (who still works in the branch) who granted the loan with no fuss.

'In those days, £100 was the equivalent of about €2,000 now. But anyway, I got years out of the car! It was a Ford Escort that ran and ran, and when it was wore out I kept it for parts.'

Sean had just come home from physiotherapy in Grantstown when he received a call from the Credit Union which, at first, he thought was a hoax!

'A voice on the phone told me I was the owner of a new Astra and I said "You must be joking!" and that made them think they had the wrong number! But no, they had the right name and number. It's something you'd never dream would happen but it's brilliant, we're delighted.'
