By David Looby

WEXFORD was saddened to learn of the untimely passing of soccer striker and father-of-two Carlos Alvarez.

Remembered as a charismatic and well liked figure at Duncannon FC, Mr Alvarez died in his home city of Santa Cruz at the age of 31 following his courageous battle with a serious illness.

He joined Duncannon FC after a successful stint at Sligo Rovers, moving to the south-east of the country where he found employment with Flood's Centra in Ramsgrange.

He was a prolific goalscorer with Duncannon FC and enjoyed one of his finest moments in the 2006-07 season when he won the Man of the Match award in the Neil O Sullivan Cup Final in Campile, scoring two goals in a 4-0 win for Duncannon over local rivals St Leonards.

The team also clinched the First Division Title that season.

Carlos is survived by his wife Claudia, son Abele, daughter Kiara from a previous relationship in Ireland and his mother Magaly.
