Chef couldn't pay insurance

A CHEF WHO said he could not afford car insurance as he was sending money home to his 'very ill' mother in Poland has been sentenced to 130 hours of community service, but has escaped a driving ban.

Witold Kubiak (32), of 60 Cluain Dara, Clonard, pleaded guilty to driving without insurance at Pineridge, Wexford, on July 2, 2010.

Judge Donnchadh O Buachalla heard that Kubiak immediately admitted the offence and was very co-operative with gardaí.

The court heard that Kubiak works as a chef in the Talbot Hotel, but was in 'dire financial straits' at the time.

The court heard that he has since obtained insurance.

He was sentenced to 130 hours of community service in lieu of one month in prison.
