An ever present in the Clonard Community for the past forty years, the Clonard Guides once again welcomed a fresh intake of youngsters as they hosted their 40th enrolment at the community centre.

While in its early years the group was operating out of Kennedy Park School, they soon made the move to the community centre and have gone from strength to strength since, seeing generations of local kids pass through the ranks. Currently, the group consists of some 40 kids and nine adult leaders and they were delighted to welcome new recruits at the special ceremony last week.

Among the new intake were five cygnets, five brigins, nine guides and three new leaders. The group is an extremely active one and the youngsters are constantly looking forward to some trip or activity.

'There aren't enough weekends in the year,' laughed leader Michelle Goff. 'Coming up just in the next few weeks we have a sleepover, the St Patrick's Day parade, a teddy bear's picnic and then a hike out to the Heritage Park with the older ones. They really enjoy it, as do the leaders. The adults have just as much fun as the kids!'

Further celebrations to mark the group's 40 years are to take place towards the end of the month which will see them plant a commemorative tree and bury a time capsule, perhaps to be dug up by girl guides in Clonard in another forty years time!
