Close call at CBS school

Conor CULLEN

A 16-YEAR-OLD boy attempted to set fire to Wexford CBS Secondary School on Saturday morning.

The incident happened between 5 a.m. and 6 a.m. on Saturday morning last when the school was broken into.

Local Gardaí rushed to the scene after receiving a report of a fire in the school on Green Street.

They were beaten to the scene by a keyholder to the school, one of its teachers, who managed to extinguish the fire.

Fire damage to the tune of €1,000 was caused to a classroom and the principal's office door.

The offender had fled after setting the fire, but later on Saturday morning the Gardaí caught up with him.

The 16-year-old, who is from the wider Wexford area – and is understood not to be a student at the school – was interviewed and admitted breaking into the school and setting the fire.
