Coastguard units help to spread the safety message in schools
CHILDREN around County We xford are wising up on water safety this month with the help of the local Coastguard crew.
Annually the Coastguard have a schools programme whereby children in primary schools are educated by local life saving personnel about water safety.
Each Coastguard unit speaks to classes in several schools and advises children about swim safety and life jacket usage.
They also take the opportunity to educate children about the work of the coastguard and the helicopter search and rescue teams.
Carnsore Coastguard's officer in charge, Assumpta Carthy, said the schools programme was successful again this year.
'We had four schools to visit and Shane Sinnott, Fintan Parle and Eamon Benson spoke to children in Piercestown, Murrintown, Mayglass and Broadway,' she said.
The men went into the classrooms of children in fourth, fifth and sixth class while young children received water safety magazines.
Schools were also furnished with leaflets, DVD's and teaching aids.
'At this time of the year it's crucial for children to be careful around water,' said Assumpta.
