The Chief Executive Officer of Wexford County Council, Tom Enright, has expressed his surprise and disappointment at the decision by the Board of Sam McCauley Chemists Ltd to move its headquarters from Wexford.

Mr Enright told this newspaper he was surprised when the issue first came to his attention.

'We know from our records in the County Council that there are a lot of people with the skills they are looking for who are commuting out of the county each day towards Dublin,' he said.

'Many of those people would probably love the opportunity to remain in Wexford for their employment,' he added.

'I am not sure they have made a proper effort to fill the posts available and I think they would find people for those positions here [in Wexford].'

Mr Enright said Co Wexford has a good, highly skilled workforce and said it's 'unfortunate' that an apparent lack of talent is the reason being given by the company for its decision to relocate.

'It's unfortunate that is the reason they are putting out as it's not the case,' said Mr Enright.

He said the local authority has offered the company space in the new building adjacent to the Hatch Lab complex in Gorey but it's an offer that so far hasn't been taken up by the company.

'There is space in that building that would be available for a lot less than any location in City West,' said Mr Enright.

With regard to the reason expressed by the company that there isn't enough suitably talented people in Wexford to fill positions within sales and digital marketing Mr Enright said: 'They are putting out a wrong message and that's not very welcome because it's not accurate.'
