Counselling service receives very few Wexford callers

By Esther Hayden

Just one per cent of the calls made to telephone counselling service Connect were from Wexford despite an increase of 22 per cent of calls to the service.

Figures show that between January and November last Connect received a total of 470 individual calls through its out of hours service which operates for 20 hours per week.

Wexford callers to the service are an even split of men and women.

The service reported that up to 54 per cent of callers described an experience of sexual abuse in the year to date, a 3 per cent increase on the same period last year.

wThe overall number of calls received to the service, calls inside and outside of opening hours, is in line with previous years and expected to reach over 10,000 by the end of 2014.

The figures show that 31 per cent of calls remain unanswered as they came when the service was closed. Connect is available Wednesday to Sunday from 6-10pm at 1800 477 477.
