Michael died in fall from roof

A builder from Bridgetown died in Ballycogley when he fell from a roof that he was working on, Wexford Coroner's Court heard last week.

Michael Bates (59), Tullibards, Bridgetown, died on July 31 2015 when he was carrying out work on a chimney and fell three metres from a roof.

The coroner's court heard that Neil Laundon had recently moved into his home in Pettitstown, Ballycogley when he hired Michael to carry out some building work for him. The work included fixing a crack in the chimney.

Michael arrived to carry out the work on Friday July 31 at 2 p.m. Neil said that they had a bit of banter and he offered Michael a slice of cake and a drink. Michael went outside to begin working on the roof while Neil put on the kettle in the kitchen.

When he went back outside, Neil found Michael lying unconscious on the ground and called the ambulance.

Garda John Coghlan said that he was called to a home in Pettitstown at 3 p.m. to assist the ambulance with a man who had fallen from a roof. On his arrival, he spoke to Neil Laundon and was told that Michael had been on the roof painting the chimney due to a crack in it. He also spoke with the ambulance crew.

Efforts were made to resuscitate Michael but they were unsuccessful. He observed a broken slate on the roof with some paint beside it and saw the body of Michael on the ground beside a ladder.

The coroner's court that Joe Bates identified his brother that evening.

A post-mortem conducted by pathologist Dr Robert Landers found that Michael had experienced craniocerebral trauma consistent with what happened during the fall.

A statement from the Health and Safety Authority was read out which said that Michael Bates used his own ladder. It said that he appeared to slip almost 3 metres from the roof on a broken slate. It is understood that he was making his way to the chimney to begin painting when he fell.

County Coroner Dr Sean Nixon recommended the jury return a verdict of accidental death. Sympathy was extended to family and friends of Mr Bates.
