A priest who blessed a woman at the roadside on the Duncannon Line after their two cars collided was held responsible for the accident.

Alice Berry, 22 Sycamore Close, Newlands, took a case against Reverend James Cashman, 1 Pinewood, Clonard to a civil sitting of Wexford District Court.

The accident occurred when Father James attempted to pass the small Chevrolet driven by the plaintiff's daughter on the inside, in the mistaken belief that she was turning right.

Mary Teresa Berry told the court that she was 20 years of age at the time of the collision on April 21 last year.

A provisional licence holder, she was on her way with her husband Andrew to tell her grandparents she had just found out that she was pregnant.

She recalled that someone fetched a chair for her to sit on and the priest blessed her at the scene because she was expecting the baby. The court learned that the child was born safely in good health in due course.

Judge Gerard Haughton made out a decree in favour of Alice Berry for €1,635, plus costs of €500 and expenses.
