Cyclists geared up for 430km trip to Rosslare
A group of 20 intrepid cyclists will take on a gruelling 430km cycle from Malin Head to Rosslare Harbour later this month, to raise funds for four local charities.
The group will cycle from Malin Head to Rosslare Harbour over the course of June 15, 16 and 17.
The 20 - made up of 17 men and three women - will be accompanied by six helpers who will drive a van and two cars, and will be on hand to store gear or assist cyclists if necessary.
This is the sixth year that the group has run the long-distance cycle and the benefiting charities this year are the Rosslare RNLI, St Mary's GAA Club, It's Good 2 Talk, and Wexford Mugendo Kickboxing Academy. In the past six years, the group has raised €29,000, primarily for the RNLI and GAA Club.
Cyclist Niall McDonnell explained that the group had been training for the past three to six months. Everyone, he pointed out, would pay for their own accommodation in Donegal, Garvaghey and Dublin. Each participant also has a sponsorship card along with some members of the GAA club.
The jerseys for the event are sponsored by Tony and Valerie Redmond of R. Sense, and Castlebridge Physiotherapy.
Niall said: 'The cycle has been a great success for the past six years and we hope to continue it for many more years to support these vital local groups.'
He said they had a few new cyclists this year and hoped that others would join them in the future. The group will arrive back to the church in Rosslare Harbour on June 17 at 4 p.m.
Niall added: 'It's a beautiful route but it's a fair challenge. It's a long way from Malin Head to Rosslare Harbour!'
