'Disgust' at raw sewage in harbour
People strolling on Wexford's award-winning quayfront are being treated to the sight of raw sewage in the harbour.
A few yards away from Wexford Tourist Office, raw effluent is visible in the water when the tide is low.
Sinn Fein councillor Anthony Kelly was aghast when he saw the sewage on Sunday afternoon.
'A passer-by brought my attention to it – they were admiring the view and looked down to find the water full of waste,' said Cllr. Kelly.
He said he couldn't understand how this could be happening after the Council spent millions of Euro several years ago on a main drainage scheme and treatment plant.
'The quayfront is the most beautiful place in the town. It's disgusting that this should be happening,' he said.
Cllr. Kelly wasted no time in contacting the Borough Engineer on Monday morning.
'I was told that there is a problem coming from the HorseRiver,' he said.
'I don't know how long this has been going on but it needs to be addressed urgently,' said Cllr. Kelly who took photographs of the affected area on his mobile phone.
The location of the waste is just yard from Wexford Tourist Office where visitors go for information about the town's attractions.
