Dramatic increase in heroin use in Wexford town
'The increase in heroin in Wexford town has risen dramatically' according to Cllr Anthony Kelly.
Cllr Davy Hynes said the number of gardai assigned to the Wexford Drugs Unit needs to be increased as a matter of urgency. 'The recent shocking revelation that the drugs units for Co Wexford have been cut from 11 to one at a time when drug related crime continues to increase' is shocking.
He said he had been unaware that the drugs unit had been slashed by so many 'when one person a day is dying from drugs'. He said it was nearly impossible to get into a drug treatment centre without paying for the service and said it was 'so short-sighted' to cut drug services when crime was increasing. 'The increase in burglaries is a direct result of the drugs nemesis.'
Cllr Jim Moore said the reduction in drug services and the drugs unit 'is not good enough' while Cllr Anthony Kelly said a recent report from the Joint Policing Committee was 'hugely concerning'.
'I don't want to be scaremongering but the increase in heroin in Wexford town has risen dramatically.'
He said often mental health problems and drug problems went 'hand in hand'. Cllr Deirdre Wadding said a multi layered approach is needed.
