Edel the brains behind RTE 2's 'In Your Shoes'

A Wexford woman is behind a fantastic new TV series which provides able-bodied youngsters the chance to see what life is like for someone who is disabled.

'In Your Shoes', which is currently running on RTE 2, is the brainchild of Wexford woman Edel Reck, who was born with Spina Bifida and has had to use a wheelchair since her early teens. Edel's idea for the show was to pair a disabled person with an able bodied person and have them undertake a number of challenges together.

'We have eight transition years taking part in the series,' said Edel. 'Four are disabled and four are able bodied. They were all taken away on and all expenses paid trip to Costa Rica where they undertook a variety of challenges together such as white water rafting, adapted surfing and zip-wiring. Basically the aim was to show that people with disabilities are just like everyone else and to give some of these youngsters the chance to see what it was like in someone else's shoes.'

This was the second TV show which Edel had come up with, following the success of 'Two for the Road' a travel programme which paired a disabled person with an able-bodied celebrity to give them a picture of what life was like for the other person.

However she says the experience was possibly even more rewarding with young people.

The show makes for great viewing and can be seen every Monday at 5 p.m. on RTE 2. It is also repeated on Sundays at 11:10 a.m. and is available to stream on the RTE player.
