WEXFORD gardai have appealed to elderly people to beware of fraudsters calling to their doors following a number of incidents in which older householders have been robbed or duped into handing over money for false collections or exhorbitantly-priced products.
Two men called to the home of an elderly woman in Castlebridge last weekend selling fire extinguishers for which they charged an inflated price and a few weeks ago, two men gained access to another elderly person's home on the pretext of checking water pipes before carrying out a robbery.
'People should be wary of callers and ask for I.D. and if they have any doubt at all, they shouldn't let anyone into their home. They should contact the agency or company mentioned or get in touch with the gardai, ' said a garda spokesman.
