Revenue officers have seized 12,920 cigarettes that were smuggled into the country at Rosslare Europort.

They were concealed under parcels for delivery by courier and were detected on Thursday with the assistance of detector dog, Eva. The cigarettes were hidden in an Irish registered vehicle that was stopped and searched after disembarking off the ferry from Cherbourg.

The cigarettes were branded 'Marlborough' and 'Kent', and with a retail value of over €7,000 represented a potential loss to the Exchequer of approximately €5,700.

A Romanian national in his 30s was questioned in relation to the matter and a file is being prepared for the DPP.

The seizure was part of the Revenue's ongoing operations targeting the supply and sale of illegal cigarettes and tobacco in the shadowy black market economy.

To-date this year, routine and intelligence led operations in addition to close inter-agency and international cooperation has led to the seizure of over 50 million smuggled cigarettes throughout the country.

The Revenue is encouraging business owners and members of the public who have information about the smuggling or sale of illegal tobacco products to contact them in confidence on 1800-295-295.
