FINE GAEL has added Mark Fenlon, the son of county and borough councillor Anna Fenlon, to the Wexford District ticket for the local elections.

Mark's addition, announced last Wednesday by the party's national executive, brings to five the number of candidates Fine Gael is to field in the May polls.

He joins Cllr. Jim Allen and Cllr Jim Moore, Sandra Lacey and Frank Staples on the Wexford ticket.

Mark Fenlon saw no reason why the five should not all be elected.

'I can't see why not, we have five strong candidates,' he told this newspaper.

Asked what he brought to the party, Mark replied:

'I will do the very same as my mother. She is honest, hard working, not afraid to tell people what she thinks and that's how I am too,' he said, ' I'll do anything for anyone as long as it is good for Wexford.'

Anna Fenlon, who is stepping down due to ill health, said she was delighted when Mark was added to the party ticket.

'He knows the same people I know, is involved in soccer with the Bohs and plays Gaelic with the Josephs, so he's well known in town and further afield,' she said.

Mark, who lives at Bargy Commons, Cleariestown, is married to Bridget. The couple have three children: Chloe, aged 16; Layla, aged eight; and Harry, aged four.

'I class myself as a townie,' said Mark, who works at Killeens Equestrian Centre.

Mark was unsuccessful in his selection bid at the district convention in Wexford town last month.

Six nominations were initially put to the floor, but Pat Kelly, the district chairman of Wexford Fine Gael declined to allow his name go forward.

That left five nominees chasing four candidate positions.

When the votes were counted, Staples, Lacey, Allen and Moore were declared the winners, with Mark Fenlon losing out.

Fine Gael General Secretary Tom Curran said the party was confident of success in the local elections in Wexford, but made no comment as to why it had added a fifth candidate.
