Five arrests after frightening late-night attacks

Brendan Keane

Five men were arrested at the weekend following three sinister late-night muggings in which people were randomly targeted on the street and assaulted before being robbed of wallets and mobile phones.

Two of the terrifying attacks took place in Wexford town, the first at 3.30 a.m. on Saturday morning when a man walking home at Old Hospital Road was approached by a silver car. Two men got out and assaulted him before before taking his phone and wallet.

Fifteen minutes later, a woman was walking through Upper George’s Street when a car matching the same description pulled in beside her. A number of men jumped out and grabbed her handbag, leaving her shocked and terrified on the side of the street.

The first of the three incidents happened an hour earlier in Slaney Street, Enniscorthy, at approximately 2.30 am when three males alighted from a silver car and knocked a man to the ground and assaulted him, robbing his wallet and mobile phone.

A Garda spokesman said the three crimes were linked and that five men were subsequently arrested in connection with the incidents. They were detained and questioned at Wexford Garda Station and a silver car was seized. The investigation is ongoing.
