MEMBERS of the garda armed response unit were deployed in Hill Street in Wexford town on Thursday morning, January 15.

However gardai would not comment on whether their presence was connected to the hunt for two cousins being sought in connection with the fatal hit and run near Ferns.

'Armed gardai were both sides of the road,' said a local man.

'For operational reasons I can't say anything about that,' said a garda spokesman.

Gardai have stepped up security at airports and ports in a bid to capture the two men. They suspect that at least one of the men may try to travel to the United Kingdom where he has strong ties there having spent a period of time there.

CCTV footage from a garage in Arklow where the men drove off without paying for fuel has been examined and one of the men has been positively identified while gardai are confidently of firmly establishing the identity of the other man.

The pair are being hunted by gardai after they fled the scene of a two car collision which left 81-year-old pensioner James Brennan from Enniscorthy dead and his passenger, a woman in her 50s, with serious injuries.

Gardai are also investigating the possibility that the two men are being sheltered by people they know in the area. They are also investigating the possibility that another car stolen in the same area was taken by the two men.
