Gathering ideas laid on the table
A MAJOR TOURIST promotion planned for next year is already gaterhing momentum in Wexford.
The Gathering is a national initiative launched by Failte Ireland to celebrate the best of what the country has to offer.
Communities and clubs are being encouraged to organise a special event and invite those with Irish connections living abroad to travel home to be part of it.
Public meetings are being held throughout County Wexford to disuss ideas.
The Wexford meeting was held in Whites Hotel last Wednesday night and attended by representatives from a wide range of organisations.
Several proposals were put forward for events in the Wexford area during 2013.
At the meeting, people sat down at tables of 10 and teased through the many reasons they like Wexford and the things that are attractive to visitors and tourists. A countywide steering committee has been put in place, chaired by Cllr. John Hegarty.
' The message that Failte Ireland and the steering committee want people to take away is that the Gathering Ireland 2013 is a people's project,' said Amanda Byrne of Wexford County Council who is the County Wexford Gathering CoOrdinator.
'Next year, the people of Ireland will open their arms to family, friends and connections from around the world for The Gathering. They will be invited to come home and join a celebration of everything great that our country has to offer,' she said. Amanda's role is to support the steering committee and assist participating groups in developing and promoting their ideas.
