Wexford Borough Council plans to embrace girl power in 2018, by celebrating the International Day of the Girl.

Other councils, including Dublin City Council, have embraced the initiative with October 11th set aside for the day of girl empowerment every year.

Cllr Lisa McDonald said Wexford Borough Council should get behind the initiative by contacting the area's secondary schools, adding that a competition could be run and the winner could be accompanied by the Wexford Mayor for a day.

Cllr McDonald said the day heightens awareness about women in politics and would help girls envision themselves as politicians.

Cllr Deirdre Wadding said: 'I think it's a very good idea. Unfortunately there are only two of us in this council. It's something that we could promote. We need to work out a strategy but we'd need to do it quite soon.'

Cllr Tony Dempsey said the Junior Council might be interested in getting involved.
