Give dirty smoky coal the shovel - Byrne
BANNING smoky coal throughout County Wexford by the end of this year is a priority for the council.
Council Chairperson Malcolm Byrne brought a motion calling for this and he received support from a majority of councillors.
Cllr Byrne said: 'County Wexford should lead the way on this and environmentally friendly coal should be the only coal used.'
He said it should be made more attractive to people by lowering prices on more environmentally friendly coal.
Cllr Johnny Mythen supported the motion, as did Cllr Robbie Ireton who said anyone selling coal in the county should be promoting the sale of the smokeless variety.
'The woods in my area are being cut down and it's not fallen trees that are being cut for wood.' Cllr Byrne said Wexford could be Ireland's first smoky coal free county.
