Golden welcome for Purple Flag award
Councillors have warmly welcomed the award of a Purple Flag to Wexford town for its 'gold standard' as a vibrant and well-managed night time destination.
Wexford is one of only four new locations to achieve the international award in 2017. The concept originated in England and there are currently 65 Purple Flag destinations in the UK and Ireland with 18 of them in the Republic.
According to District Manager, Angela Laffan the accreditation is a show of quality in terms of what the town has to offer to the evening and night time economy, from 5 pm to 5 am in the morning.
She said it was the result of hard work and collaboration between the Council, Wexford Chamber, the Garda and the town's Retail Group. The award will be presented at an ceremony in Carric-on-Shannon on February 8.
Cllr. Lisa McDonald said the award will help to attract young employees to work in the town and added that 'there is something for everyone in Wexford town.'
Cllr. George Lawlor said the adjudicators were very impressed by Wexford as a hub of activity.
Cllr. Deirdre Wadding also welcomed the award but said she would like to see more social options for people which do not rely on alcohol.
'There are people who find it hard to socialise if they are trying to stay away from alcohol,' she said.
