A golf classic, organised by county hurler Rory O'Connor to raise funds for the Mellon Educate initiative, raised €4,500 for the charity.

College student Rory will jet off to Cape Town with his friend Conor Neville in November to volunteer with the Niall Mellon Trust for a week.

The golf classic was part of his fundraising efforts and he was happy to have raised the substantial figure on the day.

'Lots of people sponsored greens and tee boxes which was brilliant. The rain held off as well so the thirteen teams of four could get out on the course.'

With the fundraising done, Rory said he is looking forward to the experience in November.

He expressed particular thanks to St Helen's Bay Golf Resort, Brian Walsh Hurleys and Trinity Motors for their support.
