Rathangan sisters Ruby and Pearl Redmond sacrificed their hair for the Rapunzel Foundation's Ponytail Campaign and raised €500 for the charity which works to improve the lives of people living with hair loss.

Ruby (12) and Pearl (9) had to grow their hair to 14 inches before becoming eligible to donate to Rapunzel with fair-haired Pearl reaching the magic length first, followed two months later by Ruby.

Their hair was cut to shoulder length by Áine in Kilmore Hairdressing Salon and the precious locks were sent to the Rapunzel Foundation which invites people to support the Ponytail Campaign by growing their hair and donating it to make wigs for people who have experienced hair loss.

Ruby and Pearl's mother Mairead said the girls were aware of the work of the foundation as they know somebody who wears a Rapunzel wig. She said it is estimated that it takes about 14 ponytails to make one wig. As well as parting with their hair, the sisters held a fundraising drive among family and friends and collected an impressive total of €500 for the charity. The pair would like to thank everyone who contributed to the fund. 'They are delighted that they did it and are now growing their hair back again', said Mairead.
