Hedgecutting rules are laid out clearly

The subject of hedgecutting was raised at the recent Wexford Borough District Council meeting, with Cllr Frank Staples asking what the rules were for clearing away dangerous foliage.

Cllr Staples asked for some clarity about the policies around cutting hedgerows along the roadside, saying that it can be dangerous when weeds are left to grow across the road. Senior Executive Engineer Mr Craig Innes informed him that there are three people tasked by the council with cutting hedges at the moment, explaining that they will cut them if there is a traffic safety issue.

Director of Services Mr Tony Larkin informed the members that concerned people may also tackle the growth themselves but added that they must get permission from the council before doing so.

'The reason for this is to protect hedgerows. They can only be cleared when there is a danger,' he said.

The councillors welcomed these clear boundaries about the issue, with many saying that the need to seek permission will prevent people from destroying habitats unnecessarily.
