There was a huge result for Cllr John Hegarty in the Wexford LEA as he followed George Lawlor over the line in the very first count, beating the quota by just two with 1,350 first preference votes.

Having made the move from the Gorey District to Wexford, some people expressed concerns for the Fine Gael man. However, their concerns were ill judged as he romped home in some style.

'It's been a massive change for me,' he said. 'I've effectively started from scratch. It's never been done before. Four months ago, it looked like we had a serious mountain to climb, but the response out there has been phenomenal.'

When asked if he was shocked to have made it on the very first count, he replied: 'You just never know. All the way through I had a good response and people were really engaging with me. I had a great team and got some great help and advice along the way.'

'For someone starting from scratch though...I don't think anyone expected me to get in on the first count. It's unprecedented really'
