Honour for Billy at 'Belfry' performance

Wexford author Billy Roche is to be honoured at a civic reception on the opening night of a Wexford Drama Group production of his play 'Belfry'.

Mayor George Lawlor, is hosting the reception in Dun Mhuire Theatre on Friday, July 26.

The celebration coincides with the 25th anniversary of the original performances of Roche's 'Wexford Trilogy' which includes 'Belfry', 'Poor Beast in the Rain' and 'A Handful of Stars'.

'We feel it is a great time to acknowledge the talent of Billy Roche and thank him for portraying the beauty of small town life in Ireland through his plays,' said a Wexford Drama Group spokeswoman.

'Belfry' will be performed in Dun Mhuire Theatre on Friday and Saturday, July 26 and 27, and Thursday, Friday and Saturday, August 1, 2 and 3, at 8 p.m. nightly. Tickets are available from 053 9123764 or wexfordartscentre.ie.

The play is a romantic comedy set in the world of a church vestry and belfry. The story of a sacristan who falls in love with another man's wife, it stars Andy Doyle, Nicola Roche, Jack Matthews, Tommy Murphy and Chris Hayes. The director is Paul Walsh.

In conjunction with the Drama Group production, Wexford photographer Padraig Grant will exhibit photographs of Billy Roche and Wexford from the 1980s and 1990s in Dun Mhuire.
