SINN FÉIN presidential candidate Martin McGuinness was given a warm welcome as he visited Ferns for an election rally on Friday evening.

The Derryman arrived after a tour of the county that extended as far Bridgetown and Wexford town.

The Áras hopeful shared the platform in Ferns with Waterford senator David Cullinane and south Wexford farmer Oisín O'Connell. And there was a speech from Cian Ó Cuanacháin, who spoke of the struggle to obtain support from the State for his autistic son Seán.

The candidate, whose IRA past has been highlighted during the campaign, told his audience that he stood by his past, while pledging to continue along the path of peace and reconciliation.

In the days before the vote on October 27, the Wexford McGuinness campaign is looking for volunteers. Those interested can phone Séamie Davitt on 086 0357072 or visit the Facebook page.
