Industrial action plan over IT merger
THE academic and research staff in the Waterford Institute of Technology are to ballot for industrial action in opposition to any forced merger with IT Carlow, which has a branch in Wexford town.
At a recent branch meeting members unanimously endorsed a motion to ballot for industrial action in the event of WIT and ITC going ahead with a merger, despite opposition from both branches.
A WIT TUI branch spokesperson said: 'The branch is very concerned about undue external political interference at WIT, given the resignation of the chair of the Governing Body and now the departure of the President. The WIT TUI Branch want to send a clear message that we will not be forced to merge with another IT solely for reasons of political expediency.'
Staff believe that such a merger would just create a very big IT, with all the associated costs, upheavals and unpredictability, and no guarantee that the merged entity would ever gain university status. The contoversy has been gathering pace over recent weeks.
