Insurance conviction

EUGENE F Fortune of St. John's Drive in Wexford has been convicted in his absence of a motor insurance offence. The case was called at the District Court sitting last week in Gorey.

Garda Cormac Sheridan attended court to tell Judge Donnchadh Ó Buachalla that he encountered the missing defendant driving on June 18 last year. Fortune subsequently failed to produce evidence that he had insurance cover in place, so the summons was issued.

Judge Ó Buachalla noted that the motorist was not in attendance before recording the conviction, with a fine of €1,000 and a one year disqualification from holding a driving licence. For driving without his licence, Fortune was convicted and fined a further €300. Having no current motor tax disc cost Fortune a third conviction with a fine of €300, giving a total bill of €1,600 in fines.
