Gardai said they were called to Sherwoods Pharmacy following reports of a late-night intruder.

When they arrived at the premises they found a man inside.

'He attempted to evade capture and climbed on the roof of an adjoining building,' said a garda spokesman.

'He wouldn't listen to the guards and would not stop and tried to escape by jumping off the roof, shattering his ankle when he fell.'

The man is believed to have struck scaffolding at the front of the building before he hit the ground.

Due to the serious nature of his injuries, the man was taken to Wexford General Hospital and then to Waterford for surgery.

The incident happened on Apil 13, but has only just become into the public arena.

A small amount of money was recovered by gardai at the scene.

Gardai said the man, who is still recovering from serious injuries, has yet to be interviewed and no charges have yet been preferred.
