Kayak race makes a splash

A WET DAY OF OUTDOOR FUN DOWN AT WEXFORD QUAYS

A NEW outdoor festival organised by Wexford Borough Council and County Wexford VEC, made a big splash on the quays last Saturday.

A highlight of the inaugural event was the John Barry Sea Kayak Race from Rosslare to Wexford Harbour which attracted 20 entrants and was won by Tadhgh de Barra who came first in the Touring section and Jim Morrissey who was first home in the Elite category.

The kayakers were given a reception by a crowd of people who gathered on the quays to try out a range of adventure equipment including a climbing tower and a rope bridge. Other attractions included tag rugby and cot racing.

The day was organised to promote outdoor activities and make more use of Wexford harbour. It was a great success, according to Colin Gibbon of Sheilbeggan Outdoor Education Centre which coordinated the events.

Next year, it is planned to coincide the event with the John Barry memorial weekend.
