One of the biggest smiles in the count centre on Sunday belonged to independent candidate Leonard Kelly. Having failed in both local and general election previously, after a long campaign Kelly anticipated that he would be scraping for the final seat in a competitive Wexford District. However, on count five, Kelly became the third candidate elected with a total of 1,362 votes.

'I'm humbled that so many people have put their faith in me,' he said. 'This is local and it's always been about community for me and making communities into places where people want to live. The support of my family across all three campaigns has been absolutely amazing. Also, I've had a small but dedicated team with me throughout and I can't thank them enough. We knocked on 7,000 doors around Wexford this time out. I think I also spent the lowest amount of money on my campaign. I'm genuinely blown away.'

Kelly admits he exceeded even his own best expectations.

'I thought I'd be there or there abouts for the last seat,' he said. 'There are a lot of very strong candidates in Wexford. To come in third, I think, is a really strong endorsement from the people of Wexford. I want to get stuff done now and get working for the people of Wexford. Wexford is such a wonderful place and I think we undersell ourselves a lot of the time. We can be up there with any town in the country and I look forward to getting to work.'

From there, Kelly was off to celebrate with his family who were every bit as excited as he was.
