Legal aid granted for VAT trial
A BROADWAY businessman facing trial of 51 VAT related offences has been granted free legal aid.
Joseph Druhan, of Ballysheen, Carne, Broadway, Co. Wexford, a haulage contractor, pleaded not guilty when he appeared before Judge Gerard Griffin at Wexford Circuit Criminal Court.
Druhan appeared on 30 charges of making incorrect invoicing to Prionsias O Maolaliadh on invoices namely Rosslare Fuels Ltd., between January 31, 2005 and December 27, 2005, in connection with VAT.
He's further charged with 19 counts of making incorrect VAT returns between May 25, 2005, and December, 2008. He is also charged with on March 3, 2008, with failing to keep full and true records of all VAT transactions for period January 10, 2005, and December 27, 2008.
Defence Counsel, Liam Stafford, applied to the court for free legal aid. He said they were refused a free legal aid application in the District Court but were now renewing their application.
After a statement of means was produced to the court, Judge Griffin, granted the application.
The trial was adjourned for hearing to January 11 next.
