Let there be more light demand councillors

Any Airtricity representative coming to meet members of Wexford Borough District is likely to face a rough ride.

The firm is responsible for looking after the public lighting across the district and councillors were not impressed at the way they have been carrying out the job.

The invitation to come to one of the monthly meetings was tabled by Cllr Anthony Kelly.

'They must be brought to task,' declared the councillor, frustrated by delays in dealing with reports of blackspots.

Cllr Davy Hynes said a series of lights were out of action in Hill Street and College View.

'Anti-social behaviour thrives in areas which are not lit up properly,' he warned.

Cllr Ger Carthy was worried that lights at the Ashford roundabout were out of order, while Cllr Tony Dempsey reported lights gone for five months in Barntown.

Officials told councillors that the public lighting contract is under review and council engineer Craig Innes stressed that he found the Airtricity staff he deals with very good at their jobs.
