Man found with 'a small bit of weed'

'I CAN'T justify what happened; it was a small bit of weed,' was a Wexford man's response when asked to explain why he had cannabis by Judge Gerard Haughton at Wexford District Court.

Shane Golden (22) of 50 Whiterock View, Wexford, was charged with unlawful possession of drugs at the John F Kennedy Park near New Ross on March 28, 2013.

The court heard that Gardaí were travelling behind a car in which the defendant was a passenger that day. They saw a small object being flung from a back seat window and found what transpired to be cannabis, which was later valued at approximately €20.

Inspector Derek Hughes said the defendant admitted it was his.

Golden said he previously worked as a butcher, but is now unemployed.

'I can't justify what happened; it was a small bit of weed. I don't smoke it anymore,' he said.

Judge Haughton applied the Probation Act.
