A man is being questioned at Wexford Garda Station after a woman was seriously injured after she was struck in the face with a hatchet during a fight involving two men at an apartment in Clonard on Monday night.

The 20 year old lost a number of teeth and suffered a substantial gash to her face. She was initially taken to Wexford General Hospital by ambulance before being transferred to James' Hospital in Dublin for surgery to her face.

Gardai said the incident happened when a man arrived at the apartment armed with a hatchet following an altercation with another man.

The young woman who was lying on a couch with a blanket over her was struck in the face during a struggle between the two men.

'The alleged offender swung the axe and hit her in the face with it,' said Chief Superintendent John Roche.

He said the man had been arrested and detained under Section 4 for the Criminal Justice Act and was still in garda custody on Tuesday afternoon after his period of detention was extended and while a decision was being made on what charges may follow.
