Matt's big birthday celebration raises €2,833 for Alzheimer's
A Castlebridge man, who asked for donations to the Alzheimer's Society instead of presents for his 60th birthday during the summer, presented a cheque for €2,833.23 to the local branch of the group.
Matt Murphy from Castlebridge held his birthday celebration in Hotel Curracloe in July and saw over 300 people turn up on the night to celebrate with him, and pledge their support to the Alzheimer Society.
On the night, Matt had set up leaflets on an information stall in the hotel for people to take if they wished. It was, he said, an informative night as well as a celebration.
This was the second birthday that Matt had used as a fundraiser for the society, having asked for donations to them for his 50th birthday as well. He also made a CD, the proceeds from which were also donated to the charity.
Matt explained: 'I had two aunts who suffered from Alzheimer's and I would go to a lot of story-telling places where you would notice people that aren't there anymore, a lot of them because they are suffering from the illness. It's a very tough thing, especially for the person's family.'
He expressed his thanks to all who turned up on the night, especially the musicians, about 30 plus, who played free of charge for the night.
He also thanked the hotel for their generosity and all volunteers who helped on the night.
On the same day as the cheque presentation, Katie Smith and Samantha Whelan of the Alzheimer Society had an impromptu second launch of their new fundraising cookbook, 'A Taste to Remember' which is on sale now.
