Mayor's father passes away following illness
The death has taken place of well-known Kennedy Park man George Lawlor, father of the Mayor of Wexford, Cllr. George Lawlor.
Mr. Lawlor, who was 82 years old, died in Wexford General Hospital on Saturday last, surrounded by his loving family. He had been ill for a number of months.
He is survived by his beloved wife Betty; his daughters Pauline and Sinead; his son George; his daughter-in-law Yvonne and his grandchildren, Christina, Sarah, Rachel and Ruth.
Mr. Lawlor was predeceased by his sister Kathleen and brothers Nicky and Jimmy.
Born in King Street, a son of the late James and Elizabeth Lawlor (nee Kingsbury), he spent his working life in Fine Wool Fabrics, ABS Pumps and in Wexford Textiles which was run by his great friend Tom O'Mahoney.
He had a back-room involvement in politics, campaigning in the 1970's for former Independent members of Wexford Corporation, John Roche and Padge Reck and later became a proud supporter of his son's political career as a Labour Party councillor and more recently a Dáil by-election candidate in Wexford.
Mr. Lawlor was a familiar face at 8 o clock morning Mass in Bride Street Church and also in the Franciscan Friary church.
His funeral Mass will take place today (Tuesday) at 12 noon in the Church of the Assumption, Bride Street, followed by burial in St. Ibar's Cemetery, Crosstown.
