Meitheal awards presented at Enniscorthy CBS to 244 students from around Wexford
Sixth and fifth year students from all around Wexford arrived in Enniscorthy for the annual Meitheal awards ceremony at St. Mary's CBS.
The 244 leaders of the anti-bullying programme which encourage older pupils in secondary to mentor the younger ones all received certificates acknowledging the training they undertook. A total of 22 schools were represented at the occasion hosted by Eddie Kehoe of the CBS and Jessica Murphy from neighbouring Coláiste Bríde.
The scheme, which began in New Ross back in 1999, is considered so important by staff and students that it has survived drastic recent cuts in funding. It is coordinated by Tina Kelly of Wexford Local Development and all leaders are required to give up two days of their summer holidays to take the training course.
At the awards gathering, they heard speeches from teacher Marguerite Furlong and from Michael Wall, chairman of the WLD board. The certificates were handed over by some of the first year students who benefit from the scheme.
