Fashion student Michael Power is being hailed as 'one to watch' after he took joint first prize for best collection at a fashion show at London Fashion Week.

Speaking from London last week, 24-year-old Michael, from Gorey, said he was delighted to be announced as a joint winner of the L'Oreal Professionnel Creative Award with fellow student Ondrej Adamek at the prestigious Central St Martins MA Show at London Fashion Week, especially since he's entering the job market after his final assessment in two weeks' time.

The former Gorey Community School student and graduate of NCAD is finishing a two-year master's course in Fashion Women's Wear at Central St Martins in London, and his collection at the show certainly turned heads.

'It's the only master's course to show on the official London Fashion Week schedule,' he explained. 'It gets a lot of attention because of that.'

He said the win also meant a lot as it was judged by respected fashion designer Christopher Kane. 'A lot of big fashion designers would have won this award in the past,' said Michael.

'My whole collection was based around a technique where I trapped thousands of glass beads between layers of tulle,' he said. 'They were intercepted into the garments, and I was able to do various patterns and different finishings using this technique.'

Michael graduated from NCAD in June 2012, and moved to London for the MA course in October 2012. Once he completes his final assessment, the job hunting begins. He hopes to find work in London, but if a job came up in Paris, he said he would have to consider moving there.

'It's very difficult to get a good design job in the industry, but hopefully this award should help with the search or at least get my foot in the door,' he said. 'It's a very competitive industry.'

Son of Michael and Lucy Power from The Rock, Gorey, Michael took second place at the DIT Fashion Awards, and was a finalist in the Persil Irish Fashion Awards in 2012.
